What is Elluminate?

Elluminate is an online application allowing a group of people to communicate in real time through an internet connected computer. You use your own computer to listen, speak to others and participate in activities. All users enter a ‘room’ at a set time, where different people take on the roles of participants, presenters and facilitators.

Elluminate is:

  • easy to install and use - you don’t need to download any large software files
  • easy to join - all you have to do is click on an email or website to enter an Elluminate room
  • recordable - so even if you can’t make it to a session, you can come back at a later stage and watch what happened

And it’s interactive! Any participant can:

  • listen to the presenter and see their presentation
  • speak to others using a microphone headset
  • communicate during the session, for example by raising your hand to ask a question, laughing, applauding, or responding to an instant survey
  • use text chat to ask or answer questions
  • drawing and writing on a whiteboard
  • share any file or application on your computer with the other people in the session

What does it look like?

You can see how an Elluminate session works by listening to a recorded session, such as this one on Web 2.0 in education  (you will need to install Elluminate first) at the 2008 Online Conference.

How can I install Elluminate?

To participate in an Elluminate session you need to set up Elluminate on your computer.

To get set up go to http://www.elluminate.com/support and follow the instructions.

You will also need speakers and a microphone to be able to hear and speak to people during the sessions. We recommend a microphone headset.

Entering Elluminate

When you first enter an Elluminate room, you will be asked for a user name. This is the name that appears in Elluminate where the participants are listed (not to be confused with your DEECD login), use your full name at this prompt (eg Tamara Carpenter).  If you wish you can also include some identifying information, such as the name of the school you are from.
